Shawnee Father and Child – 18th Century

The Edge of Appalachia, in Southeastern Ohio, is known for its massive shale and dolomite outcroppings looming high above as one walks the woodland trails. These formations have existed for millions of years and throughout human history they have endured.

During the 18th.century small Native American villages were sustained by the rich diversity of this land. It is likely that the Indians walked under the same outcroppings I did during the summer I researched this painting.

We know from our history books of the brutality that the Native Americans and settlers inflicted on one another. But we must also remember that these fierce warriors were defending their homeland and families. They loved their children too.
