Indian mother and child encounter a Greater Prairie Chicken                 

Killdeer Plains Wilderness Area, Ohio – 18th Century

Little Indian girls worked along side their mothers from an early age and learned all the same skills. Women carried firewood and other provisions back to their village in a woven girdle worn around their heads.

From the mid-American prairies to the north central states and as far north as Canada the Greater Prairie Chicken was once a common sight. The resonant ritualistic mating booms the Prairie Chickens made were once a common sound heard by the Indians and early settlers.
